Argonics Accu-Rise Valve Box System revolutionizes road paving industry

The Accu-Rise VBS (patent pending) delivers a revolutionary product and process to the road paving industry, solving a perennial paving problem of achieving maximum compaction around utility access locations.

Matching a utility valve box access casting elevation to the finished elevation of the HMA is a major challenge. The Accu-Rise Valve Box System revolutionizes road building and maintenance because it combines three major breakthrough technologies:
- An access casting and plug system manufactured from Argonics’ proprietary blend of industrial polyurethane – polyurethane proven to be durable in roadway use for more than eleven years.
- A quick casting customization process completed at the point of installation.
- A quick-change finishing gasket.
When combined together, this installation process yields a reduction in time and in paving processes and up to an 80% savings in future maintenance.
With the Accu-Rise process and system, compactions are carried out using standard heavy compaction equipment, resulting in compaction densities not otherwise achievable. The Accu-Rise process enables the paver to place multiple layers of HMA quickly, for dramatically more efficient project management. Tack coats can be eliminated. Remobilization costs can be eliminated. None of the underlying support casings or materials need to be disturbed with the Accu-Rise System. And, in the event of long-term shrinkage and settling, five-minute micro adjustments can be made with simple hand tools. The result is a process that significantly lowers overall costs. Furthermore, the installation unit and surrounding zone easily meet normal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ride-control measurement and standards.
The City of Marquette, Michigan is a user of the Accu-Rise VBS. "In recent reconstruction projects using the old style cast iron valve boxes, the old style caps get pulled out of the casting by traffic. We also get constant complaints of noisy tops which require many man hours to correct. With the Accu-Rise System, there have been no such problems to date," states Mark Trembath, the City’s Water Distribution Supervisor.
